Yesterday NBC News commemorated the death of Kermit Tyler, a young officer who at Pearl Harbor offered himself as a potential scapegoat by dismissing incoming radar blips, thinking the airplanes were friendly.
This is an important precedent. Many criticize news organizations for an overemphasis on the bad: crime, natural disasters, sex scandals... But in their defense they do also talk about success stories; people that have found their niche in society, or who acted bravely when a situation demanded it most.
What about the rest of us? We demand to hear about the student-athletes who are as equally incompetent on the field as in the classroom. We want to know about those men and women that fall asleep in the air-traffic control room; the elementary school teachers that don't like kids; the police men who lock their keys inside the car during a bank robbery; and those lawyers who still listen to their conscience.
If nothing else, it will make us feel better about ourselves.
Tomorrow on NBC? A fireside chat with Scott Norwood.

Still looking for my "niche" in society! I'm sure it will be news worthy when I find it!! Jan
