The one and only Hercule Poirot

I've never been much of a reader. I know how to read, and I remember learning the process, but I never became a book worm like my mom and my sister and several of my friends. It seems like an easy hobby, almost natural, but I never got a hang of it.

I'm not sure why, but I can think of a few reasons:
1) the thicker the book, the more I thought "uuggghhhh! this is SO LOOONNGGG!! I'll never finish it!"
2) the long descriptions bored me a ton. I wanted pictures.

3) my sister was a much better reader, voices and all, and she read fast! Easier to ask her to read to me.
4) what authors to read? how am I to know the good from the bad? libraries full of books can be intimidating.
5) my worst problem: I'd skip the long paragraphs and get to the short lines: usually a dramatic change or revelation or dialogue, like "He died." or "I love you." or "I never loved you." GASP!!!  So to rein myself in, I had to read line by line with a folded up piece of paper hiding the rest of the page. Tedious, I know.

Today, I still don't read much, but my friend gave me a couple of Agatha Christie books for our summer road trip and I LOVE THEM! I find them silly and entertaining and easy to read. I think they will be a good choice for downtime during the school year when I need to get my mind off of work.

I still have that folded piece of paper for when I get to the last few chapters.

  1. I like Agatha Christie too! But I'm always frustrated with myself to NEVER figure out the killer ahead of the revelation.....grrr Love you, Mom
