Outside in the big back yard there is an overwhelming amount of nasty little bugs that spend their days mating and destroying plants, sometimes simultaneously. The honeymooners, as we call them, are really called Japanese beatles. Everybody hates these critters (no offense to my Japanese friends out there!) and I don't even know why they exists, what purpose they have.

So, on a hot day when they're out, Matt and I like to catch them with our bare hands! Well, not me, because I hate touching bugs or feeling them land anywhere on me. I use a plastic utensil to make them drop into a deep and narrow plastic cup. They usually can't fly out, but once in a while one buzzes out and startles you... so much that you freak out and with uncontrollable reflexes you violently shake your arms and body and accidentally propel all the bugs onto the grass... I can speak from experience. Matt, on the other hand, is much tougher than me.
The other day I wanted to count how many I could catch in a hour's time or so, and I lost count somewhere after 150... Yes, 150 and some. We have traps which only do so much. Today, though, we found another way to kill these beatles: a soap/water mixture that dries them out! Hopefully that'll do it.

From time to time, I go on spider safaris in the basement! Bugs me too! Love you, Mom
