Sugar and spice and everything nice!

Last night was my first Saturday dorm duty. 3 more to go in 9 weeks. I successfully didn't fall asleep on the job. Check in was at 11pm instead of 11:30, probably because Convocation is today and they wanted to make sure kids didn't stay out all night.

Two minutes into my duty, there was a crisis. One girl incorrectly placed her mini refrigerator shelves in the wrong slot and they were stuck. And I mean stuck. We pulled and jiggled and wiggled. Then I got my canola oil spray. Problem solved!

I stayed in our lounge so that I could see who was coming and going. The girls have to ask permission to have boys in their rooms (and their doors have to be wide open) and 4 boys came and went. Most kids were out and about outside or in each other's rooms hanging out, watching movies, and decorating their rooms--which is a two day affair let me tell you.

I made strawberry shortcake for their snack and they loved it.

Dorm duty was pretty boring. I painted my nails. I made name cards for my students to put on their desks. I planned my first class (30 minute special schedule). I watched some HGTV, but then turned it off because I thought that might discourage any casual conversation between me and the kids. The clock really crawled, but I expect to have more to do once class is in session.

After a summer of soccer and lacrosse camps in this dorm, Matt welcomes all of the cucumber melon body wash, the flower scented incence, and the variety of girly perfumes and lotions. "The dorm smells like roses" says Matt. Better than armpits and flatulence and dirty socks.

Tonight is my regular dorm duty, along with every Tuesday night. We'll have a meeting as a whole dorm about rules and pet peeves and general positive behavior. It should be fun.
