A special dessert for a special occasion

On Sunday, we were invited to dinner by our new German friends, Franz and Katrina von Deutschlandensprikkenburger. Katrina made a delicious middle eastern dish: chicken in a curry, mango chutney sauce over rice with raisins... mmmmm! It was good. It made me want to try more exotic recipes.

I brought dessert. Normally, I would never try a new recipe with guests, but I really wanted to try another French dessert after that apple tart.

It's called "clafoutis". Traditionally, it's made with cherries, but I don't like cherries unless I'm eating them raw and fresh. So I used frozen raspberries.

Ingredients:
-1 cup whole milk
-1 cup heavy cream
-3 large eggs
-3/4 cup sugar
-1/3 cup all-purpose flour
-1 tsp vanilla
-1 lb cherries
-confectioners' sugar, to serve

Directions:
Using a large baking dish, 10 inches in diameter, generously butter it and sprinkle it with sugar.

Put the milk, cream, eggs, vanilla, and sugar in a bowl and mix until thoroughly blended.

Add the flour and beat well.

Arrange the cherries in a single layer in the prepared dish. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Set the dish on the over rack pulled out half-way, then pour over the batter. Gently push the over shelf back in and bake until puffed and golden, 35 to 45 minutes. Just before serving, dust with confectioners' sugar and serve warm or at room temperature.

Don't expect leftovers.

We had a great time with our new friends and got to know them well over the 4 hours. We laughed about cultural differences between the Germans and Americans. They told us really cool stories about eastern Germany before and when the Berlin wall fell. I can't wait to have them over to our place! I'm thinking I should make a "traditional American" dinner, but what would that be (not hot dogs/hamburgers, sorry!). Tuna casserole? Mac and cheese? Jello?

  1. You have GOT to be kidding about their last name!!!! Traditionally American....hmm. How about pork spare ribs with BBQ sauce? Eating with your hands and using LOTS of napkins!! Can't stand on ceremony with that one!! They can cook all day in the crock pot if you're gone. Hot buttered corn on the cob is also so American they will be lost and try to eat it with a knife and fork! Maybe it's not the season anyway! Have fun! Mom

  2. Another American idea - SuperBowl party!!! Complete with blooming onions, crackers and dip in the shape of a football (American), pizza or subs, and wings! Delicious!

Did you spell their name phonically?

  3. Yeah, Corrie, I hadn't even thought of a SuperBowl party, except that neither of us nerdy and poor couples have a TV... hmmm. I've never made a blooming onion or wings. Sounds too daunting to me... But we could do pizza!! :) And as for their name, Matt made it up. It's actually a very simple, one-syllable name, but we're just having fun while protecting their identity :)

  4. I just got my hair cut by a 77-year old German woman in Lake Forest. She was skilled and very entertaining! What is it with the Germans? They are so cool.

Mom is at Ollie's wedding this afternoon: the one I was supposed to officially participate in. The dinner will be fabulous, I'm sure.

Enjoy yourselves, Matt & Shao-Shen. I miss you both so much, and marvel how our LORD is holding you close in His Love! dad
