PROM!

I totally forgot to tell you all. about. prom.  Ok, so I didn't go, because you have to be invited by the senior class and I guess I'm not that popular they don't know me well yet. But, I did go to the pre-prom. Pre-prom is a chance for all the kids to strut their stuff out on the common lawn. The dates meet up with each other, pin the boutonniere and take 4 million pictures. The guys look cute: they swim in their tuxes and they comb their hair down with water or gel or both, making them unrecognizable. The girls look pretty, but more often than not, they look about 10 years older than they should with fashion theses days. (how old do I sound right now?) What's "in" now is a sleek look (not pouffy dresses) with long flowy dresses. One straps across the bust to the back is everywhere. There was a lot of coral, peaches and blues. Girls still curl their hair, but it's loose curls and low and off to the side rather than tight and piled high like in my time.

What was even more special this year was what Meg did for DD. Both girls are my advisees, but DD is an international student who is here on scholarship for a post-high school year. Her government pays for her education this year and the next 4 in college. Meg heard that DD wasn't going to prom, a purely American tradition. The morning of prom, Meg pulled me out of my classroom and told me all about her plan: "DD has to go to prom. She can't miss prom!! I heard it was because of money. So, me Casey and Caley and Carrie (not real names, but I didn't know the girls she was referring to) are going to chip in and pay her way. Then, we're going to beg Mr. M (dean) to open up one more spot on the yacht (everything was confirmed and closed a week ago). And we're going to pull together all of our old dresses to find her something that fits".

I was speechless. They got everything together in a matter of hours, then I saw them at pre-prom:
Meg, DD and me
Me and another student (who will be in my dorm this fall).
She's wearing the highest heels you've ever seen. She's normally shorter than me!
Me with another student (why does she look pregnant?). I walked her through my class day by day. We  met 2 times more per week than regular class to get her through. If she failed my class, she couldn't graduate, but she made it!!
My two French students. No, they're not dating, but I'm guessing she wants them to be....
(see the one strap?)
Here's my whole gang of advisees: Emily, Emma, me, Meg, DD.
A few days later was graduation! Here we are again :)
I'm going to miss these girls...
