"You're all set!"

I hate that saying.

I know "hate" is a strong word, but "dislike" is simply too weak to describe how I feel about this statement. I don't even know what it's supposed to mean! "You're all set": I'm "set" like glue? I'm "set" before "go"? I'm "set" as in what exactly? Can someone tell me? Where did this statement come from, and more importantly, will I have to say it at my new job?? Please Lord, no!
P.S. This goes the same as for "Find everything OK?"

As many of you know, I did get the job at the University Store! I'm very excited about it and I think it will be a good fit for my personality. But since I've never operated a cash register and since customers service is oh-so-accomodating, I'm afraid it'll be confusing to do exchanges, cash-back, returns, store credit, blah, blah, blah... I'm surprised I haven't had a dream that I charged a customer $5000 instead of $50. That's bound to happen (not the transation, but the nightmare). Other fears include obnoxious or slacker co-workers and/or bosses, NJ taxes, working late shifts more than earlier ones, and annoying pop music all day... We'll see! Hopefully it will be a good working environment.

Meanwhile, I had to get a new pair of khakis. Don't you hate it when you have to go shopping? Well, this time I really did hate it (crazy, I know!). It's funny how when you're browsing, you tend to find a great deal and there's virtually no pressure, but when you need something specific, all the stores turn against you.

My sister-in-law Kara joined me on this evening shopping adventure. She was so great: a real trooper! We had lots of errands to run since shopping is an hour's drive away. We decided to have dinner last: bad idea. We never had our planned Panera dinner because it was simply too late and we were cranky and tired. It was 9:30 afterall... We must have gone into a dozen or more stores, quickly scanning for anything khaki colored, and in each store, I must have tried on 1 to 7 pairs of pants. What a workout! If only I had given Target a chance when we drove by it at the beginning of our evening, we would've saved plenty of time and energy (and enjoyed dinner!). Yep, I carelessly waived it off and headed for stores I knew I liked better. Three pairs of pants on hold later, two of them in a store already closed for the night, we wondered if Target was our last chance and if it was still open!! Minutes to 9pm, Kara and I sped down the road, sprinted to check its hours and high-fived each other when we realized we still had until 10pm! Whew! We finally came out successful. Even better was when I saved $7 unexpectedly!

Aside from packing, I'm ready to start my new job! Until September 1st, I will make the most of family time, sleep, sitting, flexibility in my schedule, and cable TV.

  3. The etymology of the phrase "all set" stems from the common military practices related to synchronization of watches and other materials. "Artillery ready?!? All set!"

I'll be honest. I made that up. But I'm 42% confident that it could be correct.
