The ahem whole nation is celebrating Francophone culture in middle/high schools. What? You didn't know?
Yes, our school is participating. Did I have a choice? How else am I going to impress my school, my students, my students' parents, and (most importantly) my heads (= administrators)?? Plus, since the last teacher always participated, my lack thereof would be lame.
Typically, you assign duties to the French club leaders. Delegation is my favorite word... until you realize you really can't count on teenagers to get things done in a timely manner. Who knew teenagers weren't as mature as you expected? Huh!
Here's the plan of action:
Monday: treats for all of the Frenchies (101 students): Store bought croissants + Nutella = momentary mess and chaos
Tuesday: bake sale (only 3 people have volunteered to bake stuff--so this has major flop risk)
Wednesday: two students are going to dance the "tecktonik" danse at community meeting (school-wide weekly assembly). You can look it up on youtube.
Thursday: Game day with bocce ball (petanque in French). If no one comes, I will proudly play by myself and not run and hide in shame.
Thursday night: the cafeteria is putting on a French family-style dinner. Don't know the menu yet, but there will be French background music.
Friday: winner of the bonbon contest will be revealed. It's basically a jar full of "French" candy. Guess the number = win it!
Saturday: movie night (= nap for me in the back). Thinking "le diner de cons".
All week, French-speaking students will wear a ribbon that I've been making. It's basically 1.5 feet of red/white/blue (curled) ribbon that's tied in a slip knot and secured to clothing with a safety pin. My goal is to make 150 ribbons. If no body wants to wear my ribbon, I will wear all of them.
There will be a flyer on each cafeteria table highlighting a few French table manners. I really hope people will observe them at family-style dinner!!
The library has agreed to put up a French display of books, movies and CDs.
Finally, I've bribed my students with extra credit (something I never do) to make a poster highlighting one fun Francophone fact relating to ANY domain of life: from academia, to monuments, to sayings, to music, to art, to government.... So far, one male student turned one in and it was awful! I told him to redo it. Who can read three lines of point 11 arial font?? Thank goodness most of my students are females.

Who gets to spend the money from the bake sale?? A new outfit for Mrs. Sandefer?? Love you, Mom
ReplyDeleteWhoa! A lot of work.
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived closer. I would join in on every single French activity. Since I can't...isn't that what husbands are for?
Although I do hope the kids wear your ribbons, part of me would just love to see you wear all 150 by yourself!!! :)
