Day 1 diaper free

I know I haven't posted about any of the family and friend visits we've had in July and August, but I'm overwhelmed by that (and I took a record low number of pictures, tsk, tsk), so instead, I'll update on potty training.

Yesterday was a naked day. We started by throwing all of the cloth diapers into the garbage can and repeatedly saying "bye-bye". Kent enjoyed that. I emphasized what a big boy he was and how I was going to teach him to use the potty. Only babies wear diapers, but Kent is a BIG BOY!! It helps that we had a 3 month old baby visiting us last weekend.

What I expected: pee everywhere, all the time, on everything; and possibly a poop party in the crib. I prepped by removing all of the rugs and covering all seating with thick (and old) blankets. I kind of like a rug-free house now, but I won't come winter. I had cloth prefolds and wipes stations all over the house for accidents. I expected to be dog. tired.

Reality: Kent's a camel. He can hold it much, much longer than I expected. His first two pees started on the floor and finished in the potty. The third, he left a puzzle we were playing and went on his own. The fourth (before nap), he left my lap, closed the door to his room (leaving me in the dark) and found his potty and POOPED. I was so excited that I practically peed myself.

Nap was dry! Hooray!

Then nothing. I kept prompting and prompting, but camel here wouldn't budge. It was 5 pm before he finally peed and 1/2 of it was on the floor.

For bedtime, Matt removed one of the sides to his crib. I put down a makeshift floor bed in case he rolled off. We played it up SO MUCH: this is your Big Boy Bed!! His face lit up and he squealed and he jumped on his bed for so long that I thought maybe this wasn't a good idea after all. But still, I thought it would help him psychologically: "Don't pee/poop in your Big Boy Bed and all over your doudou. Use the potty."

Eventually he stopped jumping and we read books and calmed down. I put him down and took a shower. Kent sneaked out of his room, went downstairs, flew around the corner to Matt and said "HEY!!!" This went on and on. I guarded the door until I heard a WOW at 7:30. He had pooped on his potty. Side note: I'm incredibly happy that the author of the book suggested to leave the potty seat in the room. Whew!! It could have been all over his bedding and crib and body!! Eeeekkk!!!

Finally, he cried and wailed and wanted me to lay down next to him. I did for a bit and every time I left, he would say "Kent peepee" and sit on his potty and do nothing. Little rascal. By 8 pm, he was tired from crying and I rocked him and he was out.

I worried that he'd wake himself several times, falling out of bed. It happened only once at midnight, thankfully.
Kent's new room (don't mind the jeans stuffed in the holes by the AC unit...):
