Motivations

I went to my school's end-of-trimester art exhibit last night. Since I've never really been athletic, I've always preferred seeing my students' work on stage or in a gallery. Naturally, there were some pretty interesting pieces: from video to photography, sculptures and drawings and paintings. Some self-portraits were hard to identify (ssshhh!) but it was still art! Other artwork was so incredibly random that you just had to nod and keep walking.

I entered the gallery with a group of students. My eyes immediately scanned the artwork for my student and advisee names. Behind me, I heard a girl say: "Come on! Let's go see Josh's photography! I want to see myself!"

And that is the difference between appreciating art for art's sake, and appreciate art for your sake.

  1. I can sure identify with the "nod and keep walking" part! But your self portrait still hangs proudly in the hall and there's No question who it is!! XXOO Mom
