Sew nice to see you!

It's a long weekend for me (Rebekah) and it was SO great to wake up today and not have to go to school. Ahhh.

What's even better than sleeping in was that Chris and Corrie came for a visit! Grandparents babysat their kids so they were able to have a little babymoon with us. It was beautiful weather, a little nippy, but not bad. Every time they've come, it's been rainy so I was relieved when sun was forecasted. We had a great time catching up and having uninterupted conversation. As much as we love our nieces and nephew, we're not used to having kids around. We walked around town and window shopped, then we took them to our favorite Indian restaurant. Afterwards, we played pool. Right around 8:30pm, we all got pretty tired (embarrassing, I know), but we fought off the fuddy duddiness and stayed up late! Whoo hoo! This morning, we just putzed around over breakfast and enjoyed each other's company before they had to head back. If only there weren't so many miles between us and family... We enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks so much for taking the time and visiting us!!

Afterwards, Matt and I went to the flea market and looked around for treasures. I saw a lot of antiques I wanted, but it was hard to justify since our house is pretty cluttered anyway, and moving is a possibility. There was an old (glass + metal) gumball machine that I wanted, but the turn key thing wouldn't budge so the antique dealer forced it and it snapped. He still tried to sell it to me, but I really really wanted a working one, even though he kept bringing the price down. Sorry buddy. Keep your eyes out folks for a Christmas present!

After lunch, I took out the sewing machine that Corrie brought with her, from Kara. It was my mom-in-law's (from 1976) and was about to go to a garage sale. Thank goodness it didn't! Now, I've only ever sewed once in my life, back in high school home ec class. For some reason (pride?) I thought I could just magically make it work and sew away. But I had no idea what all the nobs meant, so I read the manuel and watched YouTube videos, and voila! Working machine. I thought it would take hours and days to figure out (half expecting a temper tantrum), but I got it!!  Because it's manual, it just seemed straightforward and logical. The newer ones have a lot of bells and whistles and buttons, and it's all electronic which can be overwhelming. This one is perfect for me.

I practiced sewing on scraps, then I just went for it. I had fabric that I bought from a thrift store last Christmas in France, and I knew I wanted two things: a table cloth and curtains. So here we are!

I really thought the projects would be difficult, lengthy and possibly frustrating, but they were FUN, FAST and pretty EASY. So satisfying. Matt's really proud too. Next up, a skirt?
