This week is homecoming week and it feels like I'll never know Sunday. Tuesday felt like a Friday. Bad, I know.
Here's the crazy-fun schedule:
Monday: pajama day (no, I did not wear my skin-tight long-johns: inappropriate!)
Tuesday: crayola color day (I was black)
Wednesday: decade day (freshmen: 50s, sophomores: 60s, juniors: 70s, and seniors: 80s) Supposedly, faculty/staff were 90s but nobody noticed my costume: khaki pants, red shirt and denim jacket with hoop earrings. Come on! Similarly, I got very upset/jealous at lunchtime when a group of seniors were blasting 80s music at their table from a boombox. How can they be dancing and singing along with all of that?? THEY WERE BORN IN THE 90s!!!!! Drives me crazy. That's MY decade.
Thursday: clash day. Another flop. Why is it that students don't know how to clash? "Wearing all of your ugliest clothing in a non-sensical way day" should be the new name. Seriously, kids wore crazy patterned (or neon) leggings, different socks and shoes, shorts, and a bathing suit over top, then multiple tops/sweaters/scarves that basically mis-matched. It was ugly. Me, on the other hand, I took a more subtle approach: a flowered skirt with a striped shirt.
Tomorrow is blue and gold day--yay for jeans! I decided to support the senior class and bought a Homecoming shirt which is bright yellow, and fun.
Friday night is a pep rally--quite a show, really. The principal and the student body president light a torch at 8pm and make their way around campus, dorm to dorm, picking up everybody and leading them (I'm sure this is loud and boisterous) to the field where there's a huge bonfire (someone said two-story, but how?). Lots of things happen, including the swim team's annual run-around-the-fire-in-bathing-suits.
Saturday, the entire school goes to another part of the state for our yearly homecoming games. Almost all JV and Varsity sports play our main rival, and one school will take home the cup. Aparently, we've retained the cup since 1999. Our yellow shirts say: "NO WORRIES: Hakuna Matata" and on the back, there's a picture of our Falcon maskot at the top of the Lion King's cliff holding the cup, while our opponent's mascots are bowing down. The caption says "the circle of life continues".
This other school is 1-2 hours away, so it's going to be a long day, especially since that night is the Homecoming dance.
Oh yeah, and Monday starts exam week. I think they'll be ready.
